Hey everyone, was going to start building a trailer to haul my 500 in. Was wondering if anyone has used or had a trailer with an expanded metal floor? How was the edges of the expanded metal covered, so you don't tear your straps or anything else you tie down?
Are you building it as a flat bed or are you going to have a rail? Make sure the expanded is heavy enough and some of your bracing will be where the wheels will be sitting.
Building it as a flatbed. I was going to use 1/2" expanded, so you should be heavy enough. Just been trying to figure out the best way to cover the ends of expanded.
Not sure where you live, if you come into contact with road salt, I'd not recommend expanded metal deck. It will not only raise **** with the deck but cover your P500 and anything else you haul with salt. Flat stock or angle iron would work to cover the edges up.
I'll say this about Idaho's road de-icer. Around Christmas I took a trip to Northern Idaho on Hwy 95. Had the Pioneer and an old Foreman on a flatbed trailer behind me. We did see some de-icer but not a ton. A couple weeks after returning I started noticing rust and corrosion in places I'd never seen it before on both machines. A few weeks after that the choke plunger on the Foreman seized up. Took quite a bit of knuckle busting to fix. After that experience I'm seriously considering an enclosed trailer before I add the P1000 to my garage.
The cleanest way would be to add another runner to the frame rail bringing the expanded level with the outer frame tubing. It would take a little extra material but the bed would sit flush with the outer frame that way.
What brand of paint is better to paint a trailer with?
