Loading in SB Pickup-do you use anything on tailgate?

Hey all,

I've got an F250 with 6'6" box and tried to position two 2"x6"x4' planks under the tailgate and rear wheels to help distribute the load so the entire rear axle weight isn't on the tailgate. Not having a ton of luck as the wood shims slide a bit as the front wheels bite while coming up the ramp. Two questions for you:

1) is there any reason to add planks as I've done or can the tailgate easily withstand the roughly 500lb load (even over bumps)

2) My problem would also be solved if I crawled up the ramp in 2 vs 4 wheel drive as the planks wouldn't move since the front wheels wouldn't grab them but I haven't tried that yet. Is 4 wheel drive for loading a smart move or will 2 work just fine?

Thanks for your input!

First be careful! I have a newer dodge 2500 and I stopped loading mine, just use a trailer. But if you feel the need, they sell tail gate straps for the cable area on the sides. I would do that so your tail gates good to around 1000 lbs.

I have a Ram 2500 and the cables will break and destroy your tailgate.
I picked up some steel strap with holes the entire length and the weight is off the cables and on the straps.
Straps are fastened to the closer pin on the box and the latch fastener on the tailgate.
Cheap and easy
