It appears the big red ss was not successful so the pioneer is replacing it...i think. What did people not love about the big red? Just curious to understand what people disliked and what honda has done to improve w the new pioner

The BR was made for work purposes only (or what it was designed for) so trail riding wasn't a strong point of it. The Pioneer is more of a sport/utility with a little narrower wheel base, more suspension travel, different shift maps for the transmission. Besides looks they changed other things like mounting the engine on it's own sub frame (less vibration and quieter cab, exhaust is extended back farther so again, less noise. Once you start picking them apart there is a lot different even though they are based off of the same driveline/powerplant.

another big change is the intake. The big red was under the seat and took out top ends. the pioneer moved intake to get fresher air. one change I have heard people are not liking a whole lot is the cab is about 2 inches smaller front to back. this is done to have a big enough box for the 4 model. Big Red was a good machine built for work but need some change. Also the Pioneer is a lot easier to change oil in.

my dad has the big red and it has more leg room for the driver. the ride is almost equal to the pioneer ride. the only reason I purchased the pioneer is the 4 seats . other than that I would have a big red any day of the week. it looks bulky but it functions almost identical to the pioneer. to me its like saying you want a 4 door truck vs a 2 door truck. the rear end is open on the br and the motor torques at a different rpm and I think the stall is different

I almost bought a Big Red until the sales rep told me about the Pioneer that was going to be available soon.
My biggest reason for waiting was the approx 225lb weight reduction and the 4" narrower.
That combines with a new suspension made me glad I waited a month for my purchase.
All that said I did test drive the Big Red as the sales rep told me that the drive train was very similar so I would have an idea what I would be getting into.

Most of the time Honda improves their previous products. I think the Pioneer is a big improvement in every category over BR. I am glad I waited and will probably purchase a Pioneer very soon. Looking at green two seater for 9500 out the door. No tax to me as I am farm exempt. Of course I looking at over a 1500 dollars of options too, but I get 20% off so it not quite as painful.
